Part 2 – The Future of Maths Education: Reshaping the Curriculum with The Royal Society

In this post, I’m shifting my perspective from speaker to listener to unpack why connecting maths across different academic subjects is the key to unlocking student potential.

In my last post, I shared my experience leading panels at the Festival of Education. For Part 2 of this series, I am shifting from speaker to student, reflecting on a powerful roundtable discussion I attended at The Royal Society.

The event focused on the vital work of the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education (ACME) project as we look to advance the vision laid out in the landmark report: A New Approach to Mathematical and Data Education.” It was a privilege to sit in a room of experts dedicated to reshaping what mathematics education must deliver to serve the evolving needs of our society.

My Core Takeaway:

We must place a much greater emphasis on cross-curricular links. We often treat mathematics as a siloed discipline, but the reality is that maths is everywhere.

  • Where does maths live in other subjects?
  • How can we explicitly build on those hidden connections to reinforce understanding?

When students recognise mathematical concepts firing across science, geography, art, and history, it demystifies the abstract and significantly accelerates their learning baseline.

It was great to attend the event with fellow teacher and consultant Kay Green and a huge well done and thank you to Catherine BoultonProfessor Jane Clarke, and Jemma Sherwood for pulling together such a brilliant, forward-thinking event. I’m incredibly excited to see how this crucial discussion develops.
