This summer, I had the pleasure of being interviewed for the NCETM Maths Podcast. The NCETM stands for National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics and they aim to raise levels of achievement in maths through supporting teachers of maths through continuing professional development.
It was great to chat with host Gwen Tresidder about engagement, classroom culture and Maths beyond school. I share what I think about and plan for when faced with new classes, including creating the right environment, setting expectations, dealing with disruption and students I find challenging. We also discuss the current GCSE maths curriculum and I give suggestion for what I think would be a better replacement.
I believe maths education can be a powerful tool for social mobility and maths teachers are an important factor in making the world a fairer and better place. I don’t propose to have all the answers but I do hope to encourage discussion and hopefully, positive change. I’d love to hear your thoughts on my suggestions.
