The first thing I share on this blog is the TED talk ‘Making Math Cool’ by Alex Kajitani (a.k.a. the Rapping Mathematician). In his talk Kajitani reminds us of the importance of humour in our teaching and the importance of being ourselves (bringing our own style!) as we teach our students maths. I’m not suggesting we all start rapping in our maths lessons (unless you want to!) but I do think we can all learn something from Kajitani’s risk taking, enthusiasm for maths and enthusiasm for his students.
This video encouraged me to try out new ideas to engage my students. Some ideas were successful and some were unsuccessful, but every idea I tried helped me learn more about what works and what doesn’t work to engage my students but also helped me learn more about my students as people.
